Climate
The equator line goes just to the north of the city of Owando separating the climate conditions in two parts:
In the north of the country, it is designated as equatorial meaning that the temperatures are high throughout the year and the conditions are hot with increased humidity and an absence of a dry period. The elevation of a few hundred meters above the sea level makes it a somewhat more tolerable. Depending on the period of the year, the range is between 20 and 33 degrees Centigrade, however, the spread of time makes the average at 26 degrees.
Rainfall averages to 106 days per year, while the sun shines for an average of 5 hours per day throughout the year.
In the south and the central areas, the climate is tropical. Still hot and humid, however, there are periods of dryness. The temperature drops between June and September and in the coastal areas it is cooler during the day, while in the Plateaux regions this happens at night. The thermometer does not go over 31 degrees, while the median for the year is 25.9 degrees.
There is a little more sunshine in these areas, however this is for longer periods rather than on a per day basis where the average is only 4.2 hours. There is rain on a median count of 84 days per year.
Overall, the best time to come to the Congo is the period between June and August when it’s neither too hot, nor too humid. Clothing apparel should consist of light clothes including a sweatshirt, a sweater and a light jacket for the evenings, and an umbrella or a raincoat for the rain. The period is also perfect for those that want to observe the wild life, as at the end of the dry season people can see all the animals gathering up around the remaining sources of water.
