A deeper exploration
of the Republic of the Congo

Officially, the name of the country is the French République du Congo. For the Kituba (a mixture of Creole and Bantu) speaking part of the population, they call it Repubilika ya Kôngo, while for those that speak Lingala (a Bantu derivative), the title is Republíki ya Kongó.

The French colonization of all the countries of Central Africa has left a very strong heritage both in the educational system and the general structures of the landscape. It should be noted that one of the highlights of the country’s history is that General De Gaulle chose it as his place of residence from where he run the French forces during the Second World War. A special house was built for him, which is now a landmark of the capital city of Brazzaville.

General information

The country stretches over an area of 342,000 square kilometers to the East of the Congo River and is inhabited by 5.66 million people. The time zone is UTC+1 (West Africa Time), people are driving to the right side of the street, while the international prefix telephone code is 242. The two-letter code of reference is CG, as is the suffix of the internet addresses. Only 3.3% of the area is covered by water masses.

The average of 17 people per square kilometer, does indicate a sparsely inhabited area. 70% of the total population resides in the cities, making the Congo one of the most urbanized countries in Africa. In fact, about 40% of the 5.6 million Congolese, live in the capital and the port of Ponte-Noire.
