88.5% of the populace are Christians with an analogy of 52.9% in Roman Catholics, 22.3% in Awakening Lutherans, 19,9% for other Protestant persuasions and 8.3% in other dogmas.
That being said, there is a large part (4.7%) of the Bantu descendants that still believe in their traditional faiths of higher and lower Gods (with or without an all-creator deity), spirits and sacred locations. These groups even practice their own form of traditional medicine and veneration of the diseased. The dominant doctrine of almost every African religion is Aninism.
For an African country the percentage of 3% of atheists is rather high (the number includes agnostics and antitheists). Another 1.6% embraces Islam, however this part is the result of a great influx of workers from other African countries. 1.5% has refused to disclose if they have a religion and what that might be.
The first direct result of the beliefs in the country is the absence of male and female genital mutilation that is prevalent all over the rest of the African countries. According to the constitution of the Congo, the country is secular, all beliefs are acceptable, religious isolation is prohibited, while all forceful faith impositions that are based on religious fervor, are strictly prohibited.
Almost all major cities have cathedrals dedicated to the patron saints:
a) Brazzaville’s Sacred heart
b) Impfondo’s Notre-Dame
c) Nkayi’s Saint Louis
d) Ouesso’s Saint Peter Claver
e) Owando’s Saint Firmin
f) Pointe-Noire’s Saint Peter the Apostle
Other places of worship for every faith embraced, are scattered all over the country.
